Chlamydophila abortus and Toxoplasma gondii are the two leading causes
of ovine abortion in Ireland, resulting in substantial losses to the sheep
industry and posing a threat to human health. Surveillance and rapid
reliable diagnosis of C. abortus or T. gondii infection is critical so that
control measures may be put in place.
This article provides an overview of the transmissions and pathogenesis of
these infections, and examines the emerging diagnostic techniques currently
being developed
